PURPOSE:A crosslinked copolymer excellent in mechanical strength and chemical stability and useful as a liquid chromatography packing or a separation membrane, having hydroxyl groups derived from vinyl alcohol units, hydrophobic groups and a specific surface area, each of which is in a specified range. CONSTITUTION:A crosslinked copolymer having 0.5-140meq/g polymer of hydroxyl groups derived from vinyl alcohol units, 0.05-5.0mmol/g polymer of hydrophobic groups having a hydrophobic fragmental constant >=1.5 and a specific surface area of 5-1,000m<2>/g. Examples of the hydrophobic groups which can be suitably used include 3-20C alkyl groups and groups of formula I . In formula I , -R- is a group of formula II (wherein n is 0-20), X is H, Cl, Br, I, or 1-20C alkyl. The crosslinked copolymer is preferred to have a structure in which the crosslinking is performed by crosslinking units having a triazine ring.
