A bronze-based sintered bearing material is made by mixing powdered copper, powdered tin and a lubricant in a predetermined ratio, compacting the mixture into a desired shape, maintaining the compact in a reducing atmosphere in the first temperature range for a given period of time to evaporate away said lubricant, further maintaining the compact in an oxidising atmosphere in the second temperature range for a few minutes to effect oxidation, and then subjecting the compact to sintering in a reducing atmosphere in the third temperature range. According to one embodiment the initial reduction step is omitted. |
