PURPOSE:To avoid the local formation of anaerobic parts in sludge, and to prevent the generation of scum by sucking a part of the separated sludge liquid in a settling vessel, and spouting intermittently said liquid into the accumulated sludge at the bottom part of the settling vessel to forcibly fluidize and disperse the accumulated sludge. CONSTITUTION:The sewage 3 is charged into an aeration vessel 1, and treated with activated sludge treatment by air from an air sparger 4. The mixed liquid of sludge from the aeration vessel 1 is charged into a settling vessel 2, and the sludge is separated by gravitation in the settling vessel 2. The treated water 7 is discharged across an overflowing weir 8. A part of the separated sludge is returned by an air lift to the aeration vessel 1 through a sludge return pipe 9. Meanwhile, separated sludge liquid or separated liquid in the vessel 2 is sucked by a liquid suction pipe 10 in the settling vessel 2 during the intermittent operation of a pump P, and spouted from a liquid spout 11 which is connected with the pump P and opened into the accumulated sludge.
