PURPOSE:To enable the setting and switching of many operation modes with a handy construction by arranging an operation mode setting member which records optical information detected by an optical detection means provided on the carriage so as to make the scanning surface thereof parallel with the direction of moving the carriage. CONSTITUTION:A printhead 12 for printing characters, graphics and the like on a printing paper on a printing platen 11 is carried on a carriage 13 moving in the direction of the printing line and a passive reflector 14 for setting operation modes is provided behind the carriage 13 parallel to the direction of the printing line. The carriage 13 is provided with a light emitting element 15 for irradiating the passive reflector 14 and a photosensor 16 for detecting reflected lights. Recording frames 17a, 17b... and 17h are set on the passive reflector 14 corresponding to manual switches 1a-1h and, for example, color coded into white and black. The setting and switching of operation modes are done by this color coding. As the carriage 13 moves to the right at the time t1, a reference position detection signal S1 goes to 'H' for a delay circuit 23 to start counting movement control pulses S2. After a certain time passes, a light sensor 16 detects the recording frame 17a painted black and the output signal S4 thereof moves to 'H' from 'L'. Thus, the operability of setting modes can be improved. |
