A sliding gate valve for controlling the flow of molten metal is of the type including a housing (7) supporting a fixed refractory base plate (8), a housing cover (19) removably connected to the housing, a sliding frame (14) accommodating a refractory sliding plate (11) and one or more spring units acting on the housing cover (19) and the sliding frame (14) and arranged to urge the sliding plate (11) into contact with the base plate (8). The device includes a support member (25) which, in use, engages the housing cover (19), a pulling member (22) which, in use is connected directly or indirectly to the sliding frame (14) and force exerting means, e.g. a threaded spindle (26), extending between the support member (25) and the pulling member (22) and arranged to pull the two members together against the force of the spring units so as to unload the locking connections (17, 18) between the housing and housing cover thereby facilitating disengagement of these connections. Access to the plates (8, 11) may thus be gained. Three embodiments of the device are disclosed. <IMAGE> |
