PURPOSE:To obtain a miniature color original reader which iscontrolled simply and uses no special power device, by making use of the driving power of a traveling object and at the same time reading the monochrome picture information with the scan of a single time. CONSTITUTION:A spectral filter 3 is moved up by a step for each reciprocating movement of a traveling object 4. The filter 3 is set at its original position after three reciprocating movements of the object 4. In other words, the filter 3 is shifted to the position of a figure B by a mechanism of a figure (a) when the object 4 passes through a place near the filter 3 while the filter 3 is moving back to its original position after the 1st going scan. Therefore a picture signal having a color component corresponding to the center part of the filter 3 is delivered from a CCD line sensor 1 when the next scan of the object 4. The filter 3 is shifted to the position of a figure C when the object 4 is reset. Thus a picture signal of a color component corresponding to the lower part of the filter 3 is delivered in the 3rd scan. Then the filter 3 is set at its original position (figure A) when the object 4 is reset.
