Starting from the realisation that in all hitherto known silencing systems for internal combustion engines, the silencing and the catalytic afterburning take place in two systems arranged in series, the object according to the invention is achieved by virtue of the fact that silencing and afterburning can take place in one container, the sound absorber used also taking on the task of splitting the NOx. By selection of the mesh width and of the diameter of the wire in the longitudinal and transverse direction, the rolled welded lattice introduced into the container can be matched to any frequency response of internal combustion engines. By dividing the sound absorber into individual sections, it is possible to keep down to a minimum the surface area necessary to initiate the chemical reaction and thus to keep down to a minimum the costs for the catalyst. The spent catalyst can be removed from the container, replaced by a freshly coated catalyst and the spent catalyst recoated. The container and the sound absorber are manufactured from chrome nickel steel and, as a result, the environment is no longer polluted by spent sound absorption systems of motor vehicles.
