The invention relates to a facsimile machine for reducing the time required for establishing a transmission modulator/demodulator message transmission rate, and in order in this way to shorten the time during which a line is occupied. Each time the machine transmits or sends video data to a remote machine or a destination it stores a modulator/demodulator message transmission rate, which is then established. At a later point in time, when the machine is to transmit or send video data to the same destination, it searches for one of the stored past modulator/demodulator message transmission rates which is assigned to the specific destination and which corresponds in terms of time to the transmission carried out in the present.
