A multilayer liquid crystal display comprises a front substrate (1), a rear substrate (2) and at least one intermediate substrate (3) between them, an interspace being formed in each case between the intermediate substrate (3) and the front substrate (1) or the rear substrate (2). Liquid crystal layers (6, 7) are located in the interspaces, with the result that the display surfaces form an overall display. Crisscrossing signalling and scanning electrodes (1a, 1b; 3a, 3b; 3d, 3e; 2a, 2b) are arranged on respectively mutually facing surfaces of the intermediate substrate (3) and of the front substrate (1) or of the rear substrate (2). Colour layers (2c, 3c) are provided on the optical path in accordance with the mutually crossing sections of the signalling and the scanning electrodes, but on the side of the intermediate substrate (3) which is averted from the side having the assigned crossing sections. The colour layers (2c, 3c) are therefore not arranged between the crossing sections of the electrodes assigned to them. The liquid crystal display is divided into mutually adjacent sections which are situated in each case on different sides of the intermediate substrate (3), the result being a uniform display surface. <IMAGE>
