A video cassette, in particular for use as a rental cassette for video-tape libraries, has a cassette housing (1), which has near to the front side (14), in the region between a section of the video tape (8) taken off a reel (3') and a section fed to a reel (3''), a recess (4) into which a light source (6) can be arranged and from which light can shine into the interior of the cassette housing (1) and leave the cassette housing at predetermined exit points on the transverse sides (13) and can shine onto photo cells (9) assigned to these exit points. It is envisaged that the cassette housing (1) consists of transparent material, at least in the region between light entry and light exit, preferably completely, and that each exit point is assigned an optically shielded light outlet window (2). This measure achieves the effect of a largely transparent video cassette which can be loaded and played back in video cassette recorders based on the VHS or Betamax system. If each light outlet window (2) is assigned an optically shielded light inlet window (3), in particular formed in an insert element (7) arranged releasably in the recess (4), the video tape can not only be played but also be wound forward and rewound. <IMAGE>
