A device for the spiral coiling of the band-shaped carrying means of a lifting appliance has a drive shaft or drum which carries two flanged wheels arranged approximately at the distance of the width of the carrying means. In order to ensure satisfactory winding and unwinding of the carrying means with turns lying closely and uniformly tightly one above the other, the arrangement is made in such a way that the winding, consisting of superimposed turns of the carrying means fastened at the end to the drive shaft or drum, is enclosed over part of its periphery by at least one endless pretensioned spring means which rests on the topmost turn and, travelling with the winding in the area of the running-off strand of the carrying means, is guided laterally out of the space between the flanged wheels and over deflection devices.
