A process for producing high-grade fuels by degassing (pyrolysis) of especially cellulose-containing materials of low bulk density by means of a rotary drum reactor is proposed. To improve the thermal efficiency of the pyrolysis of materials of low bulk density, the material to be degassed is compacted to give a solid layer, which adheres to at least a part of the inner shell surface of the rotary drum, for example by using a filler body which is fixed inside the rotary drum and rests on the material to be degassed. In addition, a rotary drum reactor for carrying out this process and the use thereof for degassing bagasse or nutshells is proposed. <IMAGE>
