In order to improve the efficiency of an engine the otherwise uselessly dissipated waste heat is partially converted into mechanical work. This is achieved by the installation of a closed refrigeration circuit. Using the waste heat the liquid refrigerant is heated and made to vaporise. The pressure in the circuit thereby rises and the refrigerant vapour can then drive a turbine, a piston or the like when the liquefier is cooled. The system can be used in any engine which gives off waste heat and can be either fixed or mobile. A large sphere of application would probably be in motor vehicles which consume considerably less fuel for the same power output.
