In a digital time-division multiplex telephone switching system with a first switching stage formed from switching groups and a second switching stage connected thereto and control sub-units available in each case for a plurality of switching groups, the data traffic is handled with an electronic data processing system connected to the telephone switching system, or with a data network connected to the telephone switching system, in such a way that a special switching group is provided via which all data connections from or to the electronic data processing system or from/to the data network are handled. This switching group is connected on the connection line side to a special interface device which feeds the data information arriving on the connection side to a special control sub-unit to which the data network or data processing system is connected. In this way, the control structure of the switching system remains unchanged and the handling of data information is restricted to one central unit (control sub-unit).
