A doll having a soft body and a hollow head which is mounted on a spigot (7) projecting from the body, is provided with a device for illuminating the head from within and comprising an electric light bulb (6) mounted in a socket in the spigot (7) and connected to batteries mounted in a box (1) accessible through the back of the body and provided with a contact plate (4) which is operable by external pressure on the front of the body to bridge terminals and close a circuit through the batteries and light bulb (6).
