PURPOSE:To obtain the titled magnetic recording medium having excellent traveling property and durability and low light transmission by providing a back layer contg. specified spinel type compd. powder, carbon black, and CaCO3 powder on the surface opposite to the surface of a supporting body on which a magnetic layer is provided. CONSTITUTION:A back layer contg. the powder of a spinel type compd. shown by the formula (x is 0<=x<=1), carbon black, and CaCO3 powder is formed on the surface opposite to the surface of a nonmagnetic supporting body on which a magnetic layer is formed. In the magnetic recording medium wherein the terminal is detected with laser beams having long wavelength by utilizing the difference in light transmission between the nonmagnetic supporting body and the magnetic recording layer, the terminal detection is surely effected even though the light transmission of the magnetic recording layer is made larger than before and the magnetic recording layer is thinned. The recording medium having excellent S/N, traveling property, durability, etc. is obtained in this way.
