METHOD FOR ADDING MG TO MOLTEN CAST IRON

PURPOSE:To add Mg to molten cast iron in a high yield at a low cost by directly adding a granular Mg mother alloy having a low Mg content and a small grain size to molten cast iron during pouring. CONSTITUTION:A granular Mg mother alloy 2 having <=10% low Mg content and 1-5mm. small grain size is put in a hopper 1. The Mg mother alloy 2 is added to molten cast iron 4 poured from a holding furnace 3 through the tap hole by tilting at the position where the iron 4 spreads so that the alloy 2 is placed on the iron 4. By this method the Mg mother alloy is added to fresh molten cast iron at all times, so clean molten cast iron is obtd. without forming slag.
