Process comprises (a)charging ferrous articles into a furnace heated and maintained to above 1500 F; (b)injecting an oxygenated hydrocarbon into the furnace to react and form a carburizing atmos.; (c)establishing and maintaining an oxygenated hydrocarbon injection rate and adding a hydrocarbon gas to maintain a furnace atmos. carbon potential of 0.8-1.1%; (d)reducing the oxygenated hydrocarbon injection rate; and (e)discharging the articles from the furnace and cooling them at a rate determined by the desired physical properties of the articles. The oxygenated hydrocarbon contains up to 3 carbon atoms., no more than 1 carbonto-carbon bond, a C:O ratio of 1-2, and a boiling pt. of max. 100≦̸C.
