PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield rationally from easily available raw materials in simple steps, by carbonylating a 4-alkylbiphenyl with CO in the presence of HF-BF3 catalyst, and oxidizing the carbonylation product with a gas containing molecular oxygen. CONSTITUTION:A 4-alkylbiphenyl is carbonylated with CO in the presence of HF-BF3 catalyst under 10-20kg/cm<2>G partial pressure of CO at 0-20 deg.C for 15-30min to produce a 4-alkyl-4'-formylbiphenyl in high selectivity and yield. The resultant 4-alkyl-4'-formylbiphenyl is then oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. cobalt acetate, in a solvent, e.g. acetic acid, to afford 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid in high yield. The molar ratio of the 4- alkylbiphenyl:BF3:HF is 1:1.1-1.7:5-10. USE:A raw material for high-performance polyester resins or aramide resins having high heat resistance and strength.
