PURPOSE:To make momentary switching of picture possible by writing preliminarily the next picture on the other liquid crystal light valve while a picture on a screen due to one liquid crystal light valve is seen. CONSTITUTION:A picture is written in a valve 208 of a writing system 216 consisting of an X-Y scanning mirror 205, a write lens 207, and the liquid crystal light valve 208, and a switching mirror 210 is turned down to project the picture to the screen. While this picture is seen, a beam switching mirror 203 is switched to write the second picture on a liquid crystal light valve 209 of a writing system 215 consisting of an X-Y scanning mirror 204, a write lens 206, and the valve 209. When the second picture is projected, the mirror 210 is turned up to project it to the screen immediately. Thus, the third picture is written on the valve 208 while the second picture is seen, and the fourth and following pictures are written similarly by operating writing systems 215 and 216 alternately.
