PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed compound in high yield, by hydrogenating an aromatic hydroperoxide in the presence of a hydrogen reduction catalyst and further an amine or a compound convertible into the amine in the reaction. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydroperoxide of preferably formula I or II (R1 and R4 are aromatic hydrocarbon group consisting of a monocyclic or two or condensed rings; R2, R3, R5 and R6 are aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon group; n is 2, 3 or 4) is brought into contact with hydrogen and reduced in the presence of a usually known hydrogen reduction catalyst and further an amine, e.g. an aliphatic, heterocyclic or aromatic amine, or a compound convertible into the amine in the hydrogen reduction reaction, e.g. a nitrilo or nitrile compound, to give advantageously the aimed aromatic alcohol useful as an intermediate for peroxides, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, useful in a crosslinking agent. |
