PURPOSE:To execute easily a low loss connection between each optical element, and also to execute it at a low cost by opposing two waveguides to be connected by placing a phase variation type photoconductive medium between them, and making a light pass through into it from cores of both the waveguides. CONSTITUTION:A waveguide 1 and 2 to be connected to each other are opposed so that the center axes (optical axes) of its core part 1-1 and 2-1 coincide roughly by an axial shift quantity of about several mum. In case that the two waveguides to be connected are both an optical fiber, a V-groove connector made of a reinforced plastic can be used. In case that one or both of the two waveguides 1, 2 to be connected are waveguide on a quartz substrate, this work can be executed easily by using a usual tremor base whose positioning accuracy is about 1mum. Subsequently, the connecting end faces of these waveguides 1, 2 are separated by a small distance (l), and this gap (l) is packed with a phase variation type photosensitive medium 3. Light for exposing the photosensitive medium is made incident from the non-connecting end face of the two waveguides 1, 2, and subsequently, a fixation of the photosensitive medium 3 is executed as the final step. |
