The invention lies in the field of telescopic booms for surveyors and, in general, direct or indirect means of measuring the distance separating two electrified objects which have a high potential difference between them. The aim of the invention is to provide such a telescopic boom for completely safe inspection of suspended high-voltage electric cables (height, diameter, temperature, ...). According to the invention, the boom consists of a telescopic stand 1, 2, 3 calibrated either dimensioned with a direct or inverse scale. At least one graduated dielectric extension piece 6 is connected end to end to the upper end of the said stand 1, 2, 3. The uppermost extension piece supports a detachable system for taking measurements. This system may consist of optical and/or electro-optical sighting targets, a pair of arms for measuring the diameter and any kind of heat sensitive or electrically sensitive probe, etc. Preferred application to measurements on, and inspections of, overhead contact cables in railway systems. <IMAGE>
