NEW MATERIAL:Panaxans A, B, C, D, and E of peptidoglycans. [Panaxan A (molecular weight: 14,000, specific rotatory power: [alpha]D187 deg. (CO23, water), elemental analysis: C 40.38 H 5.97 N 0.15%, elution time of gel chromatography (gel TSK, column G4,000): 29.3min, elution time of DEAE-cellulose chromatography: 3.3hr.]. USE:A lowering agent for blood sugar. PREPARATION:A ginseng (e.g., Panax ginseng Cl A. MYER) is defatted with a fat-soluble organic solvent and extracted with an aqueous solvent. The extracted solution is dialyzed or subjected to ultrafiltration, to give a precipitate of a substance having a lowering action on blood sugar, which is dialyzed or subjected to ultrafiltration, to obtain a mixture of panaxans A, B, C, D, and E. The mixture is treated by using difference in electrical properties of each paraxan, and can be separated into each panaxan. A dose as a lowering agent for blood sugar is 50-500mg/day.
