PURPOSE:To stabilize the level of molten metal and to control the thickness of a molding piece by measuring the meniscus width of the molten metal between drums optically and calculating the level of the molten metal by a specific expression. CONSTITUTION:The molten metal 2 in a tundish is flowed between the drums 3a and 3b and drum flanks are sealed with side gates 5a and 5b to form a casting piece of the molten metal 4 to thickness T0. The meniscus width T of the molten metal 4 is measured by a photodetector 9 through a lens 7, and a signal processor 10 performs processing from the specific equation for calculating the level (h) of the molten metal by using a drum radius R, thereby obtaining the level (h). Thus, the molten metal level (h) is detected without contacting to control the flow rate of the molten metal 2 in the tundish, and the molten metal level is stabilized to control the thickness of the molding piece. |
