PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a hypotensor and its synthetic intermediate, economically, by reacting piperonal with glycine in the presence of an organic base and an erythro-type Schiff base. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II is produced by reacting piperonal with glycine in a lower alcohol solvent such as methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, etc. in the presence of an inorganic base (e.g. NaOH, KOH, etc.) and an erythro-type Schiff base of formula I (M is alkali metal) at 15-60 deg.C, preferably 20-50 deg.C. The amounts of piperonal and inorganic base are 2-3mol and 1.5-3mol per 1mol of glycine, respectively, and that of the solvent is 5- 20pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. of glycine.
