PURPOSE:To eliminate the disturbance to the control and to achieve stable tracking control by providing a gate device which inhibits transmission of pilot signals in the vicinity of a head switching point at the time of reproduction. CONSTITUTION:Signals reproduced from a tape 1 by video heads 5 and 6 are inputted in a tracking error signal forming circuit 19 through a preamplifier 13, LPF15, and gate circuit 18. A tracking error signal TR outputted from the circuit 19 is inputted in a capstan motor driving circuit 8 through an LPF30 and by controlling the rotation of the capstan motor 3 the running phase of the tape 1 is controlled. On the other hand, a head switching signal SW is sent to a gate signal forming circuit 17 and a gate signal G generated from the circuit 17 is inputted in the gate circuit 18. In a prescribed period when transmission of a pilot signal PL from the LPF15 is inhibited, a tracking signal in which the previous value is held is outputted and stable tracking control is performed.
