In a process for the production of protective coatings of plastic at edges, corners and supporting surfaces of metal parts and other rigid articles in an immersion process, in which the reactive starting components of the plastic are applied as a liquid mixture to the edge, corner or supporting surface to be coated and subsequently harden into the plastic, an immersion coating at room temperature and subsequent rapid hardening of the protective coating are achieved, with considerable saving of energy and simultaneous achievement of an adjustably thick protective coating whose form is freely selectable, when the liquid mixture consists of UV-hardenable reaction resin, a reactive diluent and a photoinitiator and has a comparatively high viscosity at the processing temperature, and when after the application a distribution of the liquid mixture is undertaken until the desired coating thickness is reached, after which the layer is irradiated with UV or electron beams until it has hardened.
