The invention relates to a travel control unit for vehicles which contains a device for generating a first signal which relates to the actual speed of the vehicle, also contains a device for storing first data which represent a desired, preset vehicle speed, comprises a first device which responds to the first signal and the first data in order to generate second data which represent the difference between an actual vehicle speed and the preset vehicle speed, and finally contains means for controlling a component which controls the vehicle speed in a closed-loop fashion in order to return the aforesaid difference to zero as a function of the second data. The travel control unit according to the invention also comprises an enabling device for temporarily enabling the travel speed control, and a restoring device for inhibiting the temporary enabling of the travel speed control so that the control can be returned to the travel speed control.
