PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having particularly excellent durability and temp. characteristic of coercive force and an improved S/N characteristic by decreasing continuously the concn. distribution of Cu in a gamma-Fe2O3 magnetic film added with Ti, Co and Cu on a substrate from the surface toward the substrate. CONSTITUTION:The 1st thin alpha-Fe2O3 film 2 added with respectively 0.1-5atm% Ti and Co and 0.1atm% Cu is formed on a non-magnetic substrate 1 consisting of alumite-treated Al, etc. The 2nd thin alpha-Fe2O3 film 3 added with respectively 0.1-5atm% Ti and Co and 1.5% Cu is formed on the film 2 and thereafter the film is reduced at about 300 deg.C in a wet H2 atmosphere to diffuse Cu in the film 3 into the film 2, thereby forming an Fe2O4 film having a continuous concn. distribution of Cu. The Fe2O4 film is then oxidized by heating at about 300 deg.C in air to form the integrated gamma-Fe2O3 layer having the concn. distribution of Cu decreasing from the surface toward the substrate 1 in the film thickness direction. the recording medium having excellent durability and S/N is thus obtd.
