The invention relates to a process and device for the application of pulverulent and pasty plastics compositions, for example in the form of a hot-melt adhesive, in a grid pattern onto the surfaces of textiles or other flexible planar structures. The plastics composition is applied with the aid of a rotating engraved roller having on its surface depressions preferably arranged in a grid pattern, the surface of which engraved roller is heated and the plastics composition is introduced into the depressions thereof, whereupon the planar structure to be coated, after heating, is placed on the engraved roller surface and subsequently peeled off from the engraved roller together with the plastics composition situated in the depressions. In order to obtain an increase in the application rate, according to the invention, after filling the depressions with plastics composition, the surface of the engraved roller is heated on its rotary travel over a range of angle of rotation of the engraving roller of 20-180 DEG with an increase in temperature of the plastics composition in the depressions, whereupon the roller surface on its subsequent rotary travel before the contact point with the planar structure to be coated is cooled over a range of angle of rotation of more than 60 DEG .
