A compound, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having the formula: wherein R is a linear or branched C3-C11 alkyl, alkynyl or aralkyl group, a linear or branched C3-C22 alkenyl group, or an unbranched or branched C6-C11 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl group; and wherein one of R1 and R2 is OH, the other being OH or H. These hydroxyphenylacetamides have analgesic and/or anti-irritant activity when administered either topically or systemically.
