PURPOSE:To obtain a flat plate light source which is thin and has a surface of uniform brightness by forming plural electrodes on one internal plane surface of a discharge enclosure, protective layers consisting of a dielectric material, and a fluorescent material at least on the other internal plane surface and by causing time-division discharge between two electrodes of the plural ones. CONSTITUTION:On one internal plane surface 16a of a discharge enclosure 14, plural electrodes 1811-18mn are arranged in the form of a matrix with (m) raws and (n) columns, which are housed in the discharge enclosure 14 and are each completely covered with protective layers 1911-19mn consisting of a dielectric material which improves the electron emission properties. The internal plane surface, except for the areas where electrodes are set, of the discharge enclosure 14 is coated with a fluorescent material 20. And, of the plural electrodes, two electrodes are selected in sequential order for causing time-division discharge between them with a scanning period of 30Hz or greater. In this way, the light with a uniform brightness is irradiated toward outside the other internal plane surface 15a of the discharge enclosure 14. |
