The invention relates to a process for the flotation of fermentation sediment, in which a mixture of gas bubbles and fermentation sediments is introduced into an upper space of a flotation cell through which liquid flows in a turbulent manner, which then flows vertically through a space below, the flow being divided into individual vertical non-intermixing flow elements in such a manner that the ratio of the length of the flow path in the vertical direction h and the parameter d characterising the linear cross-section dimension of a flow element is at least 1.5. The invention further relates to an apparatus suitable therefor.
