PURPOSE:To obtain a secure, firm tilt angle sensor by detecting a tilt angle from variation in the quantity of light incident on a photodetecting element from a light emitting element which is arranged across the polarizing plate and fixed polarizing plate of a plate for varying the quantity of light. CONSTITUTION:One of two opposite polarizing plates, i.e. polarizing plate 1 is fixed to the enclosuer 5 of sensor body and the other polarizing plate 2 is supported rotatably. A weight 3 and a float 4 are fixed so that one point of the polarizing plate 3 is right above the center of rotation. When the tilt increase in the direction of clockwise rotation of the sensor enclosure 5, a photodetecting element 15 generates an output within, for example, the starting 90 deg. range and a photodetecting element 13 corresponding to a slit 17 generates as output between 90 and 180 deg.. Detailed information on the tilt is led out of a photodetecting element 6, amplified and converted digitally, and then displayed.
