PURPOSE:To make packing density of coal in the longer direction of coking chamber uniform, to suppress formation of coal powder, and to improve yield of coke with uniform strength, by pressurizing coal to be fed to a coking chamber during charging to raise bulk density, dropping it into the coking chamber to charge the coking chamber with the coal. CONSTITUTION:In the device 1 to drop coal from the hopper 6 positioned at the top of the coking chamber 2 of a coke oven by gravity and to charge the coking chamber 2 with the coal 16, the outlet 6a of the hopper is provided with the pressurizing means 7 to pressurize the coal 16 discharged from the hopper to raise bulk density of the coal 16 to prepare the high-density coal 17, and the raw material coal is fed to the coking chamber 2. The pressurizing device 7 has the on-off valve 11 to open and to close the lower part of the outlet of the hopper by the hydraulic cylinder 10, the pressurizing column 12 is dropped from the top of the outlet of the hopper 6, passed through the interior of the outlet of the hopper 6. The pressurizing plunger 13 is inserted into the pressurizing column, and the raw material coal 16 in the pressurizing column 12 is pressurized by the hydraulic cylinders 15 and 19.
