PURPOSE:To provide mirror finished surfaces to glass blanks for lenses with high accuracy by grinding the blanks to a desired shape and irradiating CO2 gas laser light. CONSTITUTION:Glass blanks 1 for lenses are ground to a desired shape and put on substrates 2 with high heat conductivity. The surfaces of the substrates 2 have the same shape as the rear sides of the blanks 1. The substrates 2 are arranged on a layer 5, and the layer 5 is passed through a heating furnace 6 while irradiating CO2 gas laser light 3 having a slitlike cross-sectional shape from a laser generator 4. Since the glass blanks 1 are moved together with the layer 5, the laser light 3 is irradiated while scanning the glass surfaces. By this method, lenses having mirror finished surfaces of high accuracy such as spherical lenses or semispherical lenses can be manufactured at a low cost.
