PURPOSE:To read high quality data having less errors, by installing an opaque light shielding layer, whose temperature rises when a laser beam is irradiated, to one surface of the detecting layer of a picture image recording sheet and detecting phosphorescence when the light shielding layer becomes hot. CONSTITUTION:A picture image recording sheet 10 has a detecting layer 11 containing radiant ray energy accumulating type crystals and the supporting layer 12 of the detecting layer 11. A laser beam 5 comming out from a laser oscillator 16 excites the detecting layer 11 of the sheet 10. The sheet 10 is provided with a light shielding layer 20 at the opposite side of the supporting layer 12. The light shielding layer 20 is composed of a metallic film, etc., is opaque to the laser beams, and generates heat when the laser beam is irradiated. When the light shielding layer becomes hot due to the irradiation of the laser beam, the detecting layer 11 detects phosphorescence.
