A cleaning agent for textile surfaces comprises comminuted plasticised urea-formaldehyde foam carrier material. The foam particles have absorbed therein a cleansing solution comprising a surfactant. In the production of the carrier material, unwanted formaldehyde removal is achieved by admixing with the plasticised urea-formaldehyde containing resin to be foamed, before and/or during foaming thereof, an aqueous solution containing a formaldehyde binding agent which is an aqueous solution of urea and/or a source of sulphite ions.
