PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display element which is an electric field effect display system and has good display properties, by using a liquid crystal compsn. contg. a specified 1,3-dioxane derivative. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal element is formed by using a liquid crystal compsn. obtd. by adding 5-25wt% 1,3-dioxane derivative of the formula (wherein R is alkyl, alkoxy) such as 4-propyl-(4-cyanophenyl)-1,3-dioxane to a liquid crystal mixture mainly composed of phenylcyclohexane or biphenyl liquid crystal. The element has improved gamma (steepness) characteristics and beta (visual field angle) characteristics and excellent reliability.
