PURPOSE:To obtain industrially and advantageously the titled compound which is a precursor for female hormones, by reacting Na with a polycyclic aromatic compound in a specific reaction solvent under specified conditions to prepare radical anions, and reducing the resultant radical anions with a solution of an androstadiene-dione acetal. CONSTITUTION:Sodium is reacted with a polycyclic aromatic compound in a reaction solvent to prepare radical anions, and a solution of an androsta-1,4- diene-3,17-dione-17-acetal (hereinafter referred to as ADDK) prepared by using a low-boiling feed solvent, etc. is fed to reduce the radical anions into the aimed compound. In the process, the reaction is carried out under the following conditions; (A) A polyol having >=3 ether linkages in >=35vol/vol% concentration is used as a reaction solvent in an amount of 1.5-5vol/wt. times or more based on the total ADDK, and the other solvent is used in an amount of 5vol/wt. times or less. The total amount of the solvents is 3vol/wt. times or more. (B) The total reaction temperature is the melting point of Na -105 deg.C, and (C) the feed solvent is if necessary distilled away to the outside of the reaction system to satisfy the condition (A).
