PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals without separating an intermediate as a solid, by reacting a 2,6-dihalopyridine with methylamine in water, and reacting the organic layer separated on heating with dimethylamine. CONSTITUTION:A 2,6-dihalopyridine is reacted with methylamine in a molar amount of 2 times or more, preferably 3-4 times that of the 2,6-dihalopyridine in water at 80-160 deg.C, preferably 100-130 deg.C to separate an aqueous layer and organic layer on heating at the completion of the reaction. The resultant organic layer containing a 2-halo-6-methylaminopyridine which is a reaction product is reacted with dimethylamine at 100-250 deg.C, preferably 140-200 deg.C to afford the aimed compound, which is reacted with 4-chloro-3-methylphenyl chlorothioformate to give 0-4-chloro-3-methylphenyl N-methyl-N-(6-dimethylamino-2-pyridyl) thiocarbamate which is a herbicide for paddy field.
