The unit comprises a frame which can be placed around the post (10) and carries a number of chisels (3) with hydraulic cylinder actuators (4). The actuators press the chisels into the post at the level where the part is to be severed. The frame consists of a number of links (1) which are coupled via pivot pins (9) to form a closed loop, at least some of the links carrying chisels. Each chisel is pref. slidable in a block (2) with an actuator secured on one side and provided with pairs of lateral lugs with bores to receive the respective coupling pins.
