PURPOSE:To obtain an original holding device to confirm easily the presence of a focus by providing a light transmission part and a light opaque part as a mark for detecting focus onto an original holding device. CONSTITUTION:The original 1 such as a microfilm is clipped by the original holding device 10 comprising transparent pressing parts 10a and 10b. The focus detecting mark 12 comprising the light transmission part 12a and the light opaque part 12b is provided to a face 10aa at the side holding the original 1 of the pressing part 10a and the mark 12 is provided along the carrying direction (arrow X) of the original 1 so as not to interrupt a picture region 1a of the original 1. The focus detection mark can be provided to an original holding face 10bb of the other pressing part 10b as shown in Fig. (c). The focus is detected by arranging the focus detection mark having a specific spatial frequency in this way onto the original holding device and reading the mark by means of a line sensor such CCD.
