<p>In accordance with the invention a charge is prepared in which the total quantity of carbon represents 0.82-0.99 times the quantity of carbon needed to reduce all the oxides present in the charge. This carbon content is adjusted by preparing pellets which in addition to binder contain on the one hand: a) as oxides to be reduced, in a quantity of at least 50% by weight, oxides forming combinations or eutectics between them which melt below 1600 degree C, oxides of only elements forming bases (basic pellets) and only amphoteric elements (neutral pellets) or only elements forming acids (acid pellets) and, on the other hand b) a reducing agent which contains carbon and/or carbides in a quantity that is 1.05-1.35 times the quantity necessary for conversion of the oxides contained in the pellets to carbides (carbon-rich pellets), or 0.66-0.02 times the quantity needed to reduce the oxides which are present in the pellets (carbon-poor pellets). The charge comprises:α) pellets rich in carbon (basic and/or neutral and/or acid) and/or carbides in pieces, andβ) carbon-poor pellets (basic or neutral or acid) or oxides in pieces of elements forming bases or amphoteric elements or elements forming acid, andγ) carriers of carbon in pieces and, if appropriate,δ) additional iron, which are essentially free from boroxide. The charge is reduced in an electric furnace.</p> |
