PURPOSE:To reduce the size, weight and cost of an automatic tool exchanger and enable the housing of many tools in the same magazine space, by preparing a compact magazine for storing only the tools, and by using only one tool holder secured on a spindle. CONSTITUTION:A column 10 is put on slide surfaces 2a, 2a. A machining head 11, which is moved up and down and turned back and forth by 180 deg., is provided on the slide surfaces 10a, 10a of the column 10. An automatic tool exchanger is provided on a bracket 10' so that an already used tool on a spindle 12 is replaced with a new tool in a tool storage magazine Mo by a tool exhange arm 15. In the replacement, only the tool is pulled out of a tool holder secured on the spindle 12, the new tool held by the arm 15 is inserted into the tool holder and clamped therein, and the already used tool is put back in a compact magazine. According to this constitution, the size and weight of the automatic tool exchanger are reduced to diminish its cost, and the number of tools storable in a magazine space is increased.
