PURPOSE:To improve the cycle characteristics of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery by using an alloy prepared by adding at least one element chosen from among Sn, In, Bi, and Pb to Zn or a Zn-Cd mixture as the negative electrode of the battery. CONSTITUTION:A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is constituted by using a nonaqueous electrolyte containing alkali metal ion, a reversible positive electrode and a negative electrode consisting of an alloy having the function of absorbing and releasing alkali metal ion. The negative alloy is prepared by mixing either Zn or a mixture of Zn and Cd with at least one element chosen from among Bi, In, Sn and Pb. For example, the negative alloy is composed of 80- 30wt% of Sn, Pb and In and 20-70wt% of Zn. This negative electrode does not undergo any pulverization even after the charge-and-discharge cycle is repeated and has a good current efficiency of charge and discharge. |
