Claus catalyst based on activated alumina and sodium oxide, process for its manufacture and its use

A Claus catalyst based on activated alumina which has improved characteristics is in the form of an activated alumina in which the sodium oxide concentration, the loss on ignition and the specific surface of the catalyst are carefully determined to increase the conversion into sulphur. Sulphur recovery is improved by choosing an alumina catalyst whose properties minimise the chemisorption of sulphur dioxide on the catalyst under the reaction conditions. Sodium oxide may be present in a quantity of between 0.1 and 2.5 % by weight of the catalyst (calcined at 1100 DEG C). The catalyst preferably has a specific surface of more than 100 m<2>/g and a loss on ignition of between 2.0 and 6.0 % by weight. The process of producing the catalyst and its use for removing sulphur and sulphur compounds from gases are also described.
