The container has to be heated before steel is admitted in order to prevent it solidifying on contact with the walls. The heating is brought about by oxidising the fuel (liquid or gaseous) in the presence of oxygen (as distinct from air). The ladle is placed on its side on a stand. Fuel enters and is burned in the burner via an oxygen pipe. The burner is water cooled.
