PURPOSE:To enable accurate reading of a stamp shape by picture-inputting reflected light obtained by scanning spotlight and by registering a pattern of a stamp shape from the light. CONSTITUTION:A signal of an end point detector 16 of an Y axis is fecthed into an arithmetic unit 4 through an input circuit 15, and by the signal a picture input from an image pickup device 1 is started. The inputted picture signal is stored in a picture memory 3 through a binary circuit 2. When the other end point detector 17 operates, the fetching of pictures are provisionally interrupted. Here, coordinates in which divided light beams at two points are obtained, and these coordinates are registered in a table as a stamp condidate point. Afterward, a light source 6 is shifted in an X axis direction by width of spotlight, the fetching of pictures is conducted in the same manner, and stamp candidate points are registered in a table. When the registration of coordinates to a table is completed, a pattern obtained by these coordinates is known; therefore the arithmetic unit 4 discriminates its shape utilizing a pattern matching system.
